Butterfly valve

Pipe valve with tendency to closing.

The butterfly valve, mounted to a pipe, consists of a disc which turns in a side way - from where the name butterfly -, perpendicularly to the fluid flow. The offset between the center of pressure and its rotation axis allows obtaining a tendency to closing in position close to the total obturation, guaranteeing thus at the same time safety and sealing.

Applications:

Counterbalanced by a counterweight, it is often used as safety isolating valve at turbine inlet. Its principal disadvantage is to induce a pressure loss and disorders in the flows at high speed because of the drag of its disc leaf; the shaping of this disc makes it possible to reduce this problem partially.

Safety:

The use of a hydraulic actuating cylinder and a counterweight makes it possible to guarantee the closing of the butterfly valve even in lack of energy supply.

Type of handling mechanism:

The butterfly valve can be operated by an electric actuator combined with screw jacks or by a hydraulic cylinder.
