Ecoclap, the turbine flap gate

Developing an energy which one believed to be wasted

The assembly of a series of submersible water turbines inside the hollow structure of a flap gate makes it possible to produce electricity.
The flow which overflow usually can then be turbined and produce renewable energy.
A flap gate with 12m width and 4m height can develop an electric power of 120kW with six turbines.

Applications:

  • at the time of the restoration of dams with flap gates
  • on sites sensitive to the hydraulic impact

The applications are numerous:

  • to turbine compensation water
  • over-equipment of existing power plants
  • equipment of sites sensitive to the hydraulic impact

The principle

  • Water supply by overflow
  • realization of a water chamber inside the hollow structure of the flap gate
  • use of small-size submersibles water turbines

Operation and advantages

  • no hydraulic impact
  • regulating of the water level possible even in the event of stopping of the turbines
  • low piscicultural mortality
  • evacuation of waste by flushing
  • easy maintenance
  • lower costs than those of a traditional small hydro power plant

Range of use

  • heads from 3 to 6 m
  • flow from 250 to 500 l/s/m crest
